Ethnic: Italian

The strong majority of Italian dishes are boldly flavored with tomato, which is quite acidic. This makes it difficult to pair with wines, especially red wines. But don't worry -- there are Italian reds that can match the acidity in tomato sauce and elevate a simple Italian dinner to a new level. The best red option for this is a hearty Barbera. For a softer white, go with Chianti.

If your dish is going to be a pesto-based one, go with a white like Chardonnay or a Primitivo.

For Alfredo sauces, a light, crispy, citrusy wine like Pinot Grigio would accentuate the sauce's flavors.
